This is probably one of the best systems for your money. As other reviewers have already posted it has just about everything you need. Four HDMI inputs, upconverts video to 1080p, booming subwoofer, great sounding speakers, and even an Ipod dock. One of the coolest features is the setup microphone. Place your speakers, plug in the mic and the calibration program starts. It sends a tone to each speaker and measures it from the center then left and then right side of your seating area (couch). It then adjusts the surround sound for optimal sound. Amazing! If you haven't experienced 7.1 surround you are in for a treat. It's so good I have actually heard fans screaming "Here we go Steelers, here we go!" from IN BETWEEN my middle right and back right speakers. Really makes you feel like you are sitting on the team bench in the stadium. Add a blueray player and you will have the total package.
Things to think about:
Read the manual!!!!!! This system does soooo much you will cheat yourself out of many features if you just try to plug and play.
Buy some good speaker wire. I used 16 gage and rewired the speaker stands using it. Much better than the stuff they give you. Also buy a decent HDMI cable . If you have your cable box wired directly to your TV with one you will find you now need an extra one to get everything hooked up correctly. Give it a lot of air. Gives off some heat so don't stack other components on top of it. The remote can be programed to run other components> I have mine set to run my Comcast cable box so i can run the Guide and volume functions from the Onkyo remote.
Things to get used to. All programs are NOT in 7.1. Sometimes only the front speakers will work, sometimes the front and sides are on, and when you are lucky they will all be cranking. It's the cable not your receiver! The same goes with HD. A lot depends on the rez of the cameras it was shot with. Some programs look better in HD than others. Check out Planet Earth on Blueray if you want the ultimate viewing experience. Keep the subwoffer set to about half volume on the back of the speaker if you don't want rattling dishes, it really is very capable. The 2 speaker stands are very nice, I just wish the had included 2 more. Teach your wife how to run the remote and you will thank me. Had several angry exchanges over her inability to turn stuff on and off like they "used to work" All in all it is a fantastic system for what you get. By it now before the Superbowl is on and really impress your pals.
One more thing: Amazon shipped this to me in 3 days from when I ordered it. No tax, free shipping and the UPS drivers carried it into my living room for me. I have had a great shipping experience with them for both this system and my Sansung 40" TOC TV also from Amazon ( see that review as well)
