Rating : - Low on funds? Want great sound? BUY THIS SYSTEM NOW!!!!! I write this review for you all because all the reviews that I read about this system caused me to buy it, and I could not be happier.....nor can I believe how good this thing works. So I feel compelled to share my good fortune as well.
I really like really good sound. I can't stand standard TV speaker sound and haven't listened to it in 11 years. I pretty much never listen to my stock car stereo's until they have been upgraded....for me it sucks that bad. I've had a few rockin car systems and thoroughly enjoyed them. I had a brother in law that owned a car stereo shop that I worked in and I've heard ALOT of serious systems. I know what good sound sounds like. I like really good sound and must have it....but I usually can't afford it. It sucks to have a great ear for sound, but empty pockets/wallets.
It was time for me to upgrade my 11 yr old surround sound system which consisted of a Kenwood stereo amp, Yamama surround sound proccessor, a Klipch center speaker and 4 big old stereo speakers. It was OK in it's day, and separated the sound OK too, but overall it was work for me to fully enjoy it. It just wasn't going to cut it anymore.
Enter the ONKYO HT-S5100. Based on my lack of money and the mostly raving reviews about this system found online, I bought one on Amazon at the beggining of December for $370 shipped in 2 days. When it got here I ripped open the really big and heavy box and right on top I found the 2 empty spots in the midst of the packaging styrofoam. Like another reviewer mentioned, that's normal. Everything arrived in order, in perfect shape, including the ridiculous 22awg speaker wire. (Do yourself a huge favor and throw that crap away.) I already have great wire from my old system but I needed more wire for the rear surrounds. I found perfectly fine 16awg wire at DIRT CHEAP prices at MONOPRICE.COM. (by the way, you don't need to spend a fortune on "Monster Cable" or any other name brand empty your bank account wire....no matter what any salesman or person says)
Once it was all hooked up I ran the really cool speaker-setup-mike test which took about 15 minutes. Then I threw my sons I-pod in the supplied dock, hit the power button, then had my ears and eyes BLOWN AWAY!!!! I just could not believe the sound that $370 bought me! I've been listening to it for a week and I still can't believe it! Awesome bass, highs, mids, seperation.....it's all there. When I watched a couple of DVD's with my wife and kids, the surround effect was so real that my wife and 11 year old son kept turning around to see who was in the house, or what was behind them making that noise. HaHaHa That was funny, and it showed me that I had a winning system.
I'm sure you've read many of the same things on other reviews but I would like to bring up a few others that I didn't read before getting my system. One is the options and adjustabiliy of this sound system is crazy. I mean you can pick from about 8 different main listening "modes" and then even more "styles" and such. The reciever is so smart that every time I change from I-pod, to DVD mono, to DVD 5.1 Digital, to CD, it recogognizes what type of sound format is coming in and automatically picks the right sound mode for me. You can also fine tune the sound all kinda ways, through each speaker separately. Another nice touch that I didn't know it had is that the remote control that came with it came with a 17 page code manuel that allows me to work my TV, VCR, I-pod, DVD player, and cable box all from one remote! I did have to buy a sound cable (I picked the digital Coax cable, $10 at Wal-mart) cause I don't have a HDMI hookup on my TV. It didn't matter to me and I could not have cared less.
To ensure you get good sound out of this unit there are several things that you must do to ensure that you are getting the awesome sound out. They are: 1. Throw away the stupid stock wire and get 16 gauge speaker wire. (unless your wire run is longer than 50 ft, and need to go to 14 gauge or higher) 2. READ the manual and place your speakers in the BEST postions you can get them in. 3. READ the manual and USE THE AUTO-MIC setup feature. 4. READ the manual and use the best sound hook-ups which are digital! (HDMI, Coax, or optical cable) 5. READ the manual and move your sub-woofer around the room to see where it works best, and adjust it. This one thing makes a huge difference. 6. If your watching a DVD, make sure, if needed, you pick the surround sound option from most "Audio setup" DVD main menus. Some of them default to mono....which of course is lame.
Do this, and you too will not believe the sound quality that your little money just bought. The sound that I hear coming out of this thing compares with the $1500 I spent on my best car sound system about 5 years ago. I swear that if I had anyone with half a brain come over here, that likes sound even half as much as I do, sit down on my couch and listen to some music and then watch the Transformers DVD, and then told you that I only spent $370 for the whole thing, you would not believe me.
The speakers don't look all that impressive, but they sound way better than they look. The base box looks pretty good, but works great. When you look at the simple componants by themselves or even together stacked up in a store like BestBuy, it does not look like it's all that great. But listen to this thing when hooked up correctly and your ears will be saying "wow!" and your eyes will be saying "huh?"
