Rating : - Very flawed product, but some possible solutions... The reviews here are split between good and bad, and both are correct.
If you just open the package, plug in the Action Replay to your DS, plug in your game cartridge, turn it on and play - yes, it seems the device works well. This is assuming your game's codes were preloaded on the Action Replay. I can't speak for the device's longevity, though it seems no more or less fragile than the game cartridges.
Where many issues are reported is with trying to get the Action Replay device (ARDS) to successfully connect via USB to your computer and the included Code Manager software so that you can customize and update the codes on your Action Replay. My ARDS never connected to the computer. The included documentation is horrible. There is little information on the web, though thankfully other reviewers here have helped. If your Code Manager software is continually waiting for the DS, these are the sites you will need to read:
This explains some of the possible issues, including the fact that if you have Action Replay DS firmware 1.60 or higher, you were shipped the incorrect drivers:
[...]
And this is the well-hidden faq on Datel's site admitting to the driver issue - as well as a link to download new software (expand the question "Q: My Action Replay DS is not being recognized by the Code Manager Software, it just says "Waiting For DS" in the left window; what do I do?"
[...]
And here is that updated software:
[...]
If everything is working correctly, your ARDS should automatically switch to the Updating screen on your DS when it is plugged into a USB port (ARDS in DS and powered on). And when you start up Code Manager, the DS window should automatically update with the contents of your ARDS.
OK - so after spending many hours trying to find all this out, reinstalling everything, etc. - I STILL GOT "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED." WHEN I TRIED TO CONNECT MY ARDS TO MY PC! I exchanged mine for another one (I bought locally) and this one worked perfectly! Yup - they're very cheaply manufactured and my first one was simply defective.
For what it's worth, 3 emails to Datel's customer support have so far been unacknowledged. Their site is clearly not meant to offer true customer support for issue resolution.
I'm writing this because I know how frustrated I was and if any of this helps one person out there in the same situation, then it was worth my writeup! You should definitely consider your pain threshold before buying this thing!
EDIT - see my added comments for the links (which got deleted here).
