The first CD features Dimitri from Paris's solid set, while the other discs contain the DJ's source material in original, unmixed form. Those unmixed discs reveal what was left out of pared-down, hit-radio versions of disco songs: flights of jazz-funk improv and highly danceable sections dominated by Latin percussion. The Latin element is big on Disco Forever; not only is it brimming with sensual samba and tango rhythms, but Spanish vocals grace three of the tracks. One highlight is Touch's no-nonsense instrumental version of Diana Ross's classic "Love Hangover." Skylite's slinky "Smile"; Silver, Platinum and Gold's tense, ecstatic "I Got a Thing"; and Universal Robot Band's supergroovy "Barely Breaking Even" also stand out. The rough and ready "Shout at the Disco" by Little Scotty only appears on the Dimitri-mixed CD. Its three minutes of raw funk rule. --Fred Cisterna | |
